OAK Long Bar & Kitchen

At the Fairmont Copley Plaza, Boston, Massachusetts

Completion Date: 2012    Role: Principal Designers
Overview: Renovation and Design of the prestigious 100 year-old dining room, The Oak Room within the Copley Plaza Hotel

The Oak Room has been open and serving for 100 years. With a deep respect for stories told by previous generations (and former heads of state), Ted Berner and Dayna Lee were so pleased to have the opportunity to set the design for the Oak's next century and start a new generation of intriguing stories. Decades of renovations had slowly stripped any actual oak wood from the restaurant and bar space. Further major changes had removed a wondrous Merry-Go-Round Bar that was installed during Prohibition and existed until the 1970’s.

We set about conceptualizing a redesign and rebirth which seamlessly merges the original Beaux-Arts love of bold chambered sculpture with a contemporary architectural language and finish. Our Powerstrip designers custom designed furnishings, tile work, cerused oak special joinery, fireplaces and curated paintings suitable for a university club. We even designed the house whisky. On the copper bar (the longest in North America) is emblazoned, “We serve the Nation.” Indeed they do.
